This past spring, a group of amateur and professional musicians
gathered for a “Birthday Karaoke” concert to celebrate our
friend’s birthday – it was his birthday wish, so how could we say
no? I sang one of my favorite Kate Bush tunes and a Bonnie Raitt
classic, “Nick of Time.”
Performing “non-classical” music in front of an audience was
both nerve-wracking and exhilarating – I didn’t know how my
voice would “measure up” against my peers.
But what struck me most was the audience’s wholehearted
cheering – every performance received instant, enthusiastic
applause. This was such a stark contrast to classical shows, which
can often feel isolating when applause is delayed to the end of a
set. Getting real-time feedback was a totally new experience for
me and I wanted more of that in my life.
Inspired by that night, I set out to make “The Eternal
Feminine: Plugged In” a reality before the year was up.
I’ve chosen pieces from the mellower side of rock, featuring songs
written or performed by women. To use a car analogy, this “EF”
is less “electric” than it is a “hybrid.” Yes, there are microphones
and all of the guitars are amplified, but you won’t need earplugs.
From Carole King’s heartfelt “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural
Woman” to Bonnie Raitt’s soulful “Nick of Time,” and
Tori Amos’s bittersweet “A Sorta Fairytale,” each piece explores
aspects of love and relationships, a common theme with my
“Eternal Feminine” concert series.
I’m thrilled to share the stage with my husband Dave Finneran
(guitar/vocals) and four amazing friends who generously hopped
on board – Pete Larkin (guitar/banjo/vocals), Carl
Steinhauser (keys), Dan McDonald (bass), and David Jones
(drums).
Fellow singer Érika Wood opens the evening with
Joni Mitchell’s Blue and lends her crystal‑clear voice to my set on
backup vocals.
